A family Elder Reid has been teaching.
Dear Family & Friends,
Well, this week was pretty exciting. Elder Pearson got sick, that was not good. We don’t know really what he had but it was only one day and he was better. That day also we went with a member to see one of the people we were going to baptize and she was going to make us potatoes, so instead we took them home and made them ourselves. They were nice, but not too good because there was no meat or anything else to eat with it.
We had a baptism of 6 people, it was great. A family and another lady were baptized and it was really great. They had a good time at the baptism. I really love to see baptisms. There was also one child of record that we found had not been baptized so he also was baptized. It’s funny; if it would have been 2 weeks later he would have been a recent convert! We also found some new people that we will be baptizing soon. We are teaching a great man who is 77 years old and he found the church on his own. He works at a school where the Head Master is a member so I think that is how he found us. He just left his own church and started to come. He is really cool, asks some really good, deep questions. We have studied a lot because of him. He is preparing to be baptized on the 22nd of May, so that is going to be really cool.
This week was General Conference week for us and everything went very well. We were able to watch 2 sessions--the Saturday afternoon and the Sunday morning. It was cool to see Elder Holland speak since we have seen him in person! Their talks were really good, but I did not hear the first one very well because the mic was kind of goofed up, but they got it fixed. The zone is still going good, this week we will see if we are where we need to be or not. Because of conference lots of people did not come to church but we did have an unexpected person come--he is a guy from Ivory Coast. He speaks English now but he is a French guy. He is really cool and understands what we teach him every time we teach him. I really like the guy. I hope that he will continue to come to church even though it was hard with conference.
It rained really hard. We were in some of it and my sandals got water all over in them it was not good. So, all of my shoes are spoiled—they have holes in them and the others are sandals--so I guess during the rainy season I will just not wear shoes anymore! No, just kidding! I think that I am going to get some money out of the bank today and go buy some shoes in Madina. I am tired of trying to make these shoes work every day. They are too old! I guess it shows that I’m getting really old on mission or just that my shoes were not good. I think that I’m old! ha ha.
I guess I will get that suit made just to my size. I will have some new stuff soon. I have tried to make everything last until I finish, it’s not that much longer, but its starting to get pretty bad. Today I actually have a shirt on from the very first of my mission! I have had it this whole time and I wear it about every week so the shirts are good, but the shoes are just not. My trousers from the first are still hanging on (just barely) I might be getting rid of them soon.
About the phone call--I think we will be calling sometime between 7 and 9. This will be the last one and then the next time we talk it will be face to face.
If you do come to Ghana Dad could get a suit and if anyone else wanted one then you could get one for them. They are real nice suits not crappy ones. We have not had time to get the masks or anything like that, but we will for sure have time to get some. I will also get some cool paintings that I will bring home--maybe some for each house like ours, Shelby and Matt’s, Josh and Jenny’s, and both sets of Grandparents. They are really cool. There are lots of neat things that I always see, but I can never go get them because they are always outside of tro tros or taxis.
This Sunday we ate at a different place--they are some members that we just met. We ate snail and sheep and fish from the river it was really weird, I don’t really like snail. It has flavor like you are eating something mossy! The sheep was really good. It has a flavor like cow or goat; it’s all about the same. It was all in palm nut soup and fu fu. So I don’t really like palm nut soup, as I think you already know. I think there is too much oil in it. It tastes nice, it’s not that it has a bad flavor, I just don’t like it myself--actually most obrunies don’t like it at all and won’t eat it. I will eat it.
After this we are going into Madina to buy some shoes and cereal and some cookies. I think I will get some Colgate toothpaste also. Then we will head back home to the apartment before we go out to see more people. We are really trying to find some people that will fill the spots that we have because they were all baptized. We do have a long time because we already finished our goal. Now we are just getting more in case other baptisms fail in the zone. So, we have 4 weeks to find more great people. And that’s a lot of time. We have lots that this week were suppose to come--1 family of 4 and another 2 and then 1--but they did not come so that was pretty sad. This week we will work with them and if they don’t come again we will move on and find some more great people.
We have one guy that is really cool--I will tell you a little about him. He goes to a different church and he is high up in the church--he will be a priest very soon. Last week he came to church and he loves it--he loved the teachings and everything. He is thinking about giving away his title and moving his family to the church, so that is going to be really sweet if it all works out like it is supposed to.
So, guess what?!? I don’t know if I told you this but I don’t wash my own clothes anymore. Some guy does everyone else’s so I also let him do mine, so I don’t have to. They are not as good as when I do it, but it’s okay and worth it some how.
Wow, this is probably the longest email I have ever sent! To answer your question---Kontomery is a green leaf plant that you cook and put in stew or rice or stuff like that—it’s not nice at all. Sometimes it just depends what you put it in. I like it in eggs, but on rice it is not nice at all. I just still don’t like green leafs or anything that is green at all. I like onions and beans and tomatoes and other weird stuff but green stuff I still don’t like.
This week I think I am going to make some pancakes because we found a way to make syrup. We are eating a lot of American food, it’s been really fun. I have eaten lots of Ghanaian food these past years and now I want some home town cooking. I even think that I will love some stuff that I hated back home--like casserole! I think I will love it now--every kind of casserole! That’s all I want to eat when I get home for about 10 months--and lasagna and lots of other weird stuff. There is so much variety back home--that is what makes life sweet.
Well, I love you all tons! I will probably send more pictures next week--if I have enough time. I will take a lot this week so that you can see what we do in a week. It’s lots of stuff, but I will do it. Miss you, but next week I will talk to you for real!
Love, Elder Jeremy Reid
